Forum targets organ donations, transplantation
A forum on organ donations and transplantation was held in Baotou, in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region on July 27, inviting domestic organ transplant experts, according to a report in the Baotou Evening News.
The forum, hosted by the Beijing Medical Award Foundation Urology Committee, exchanged views on and discussed the latest developments and hot topics in the field of organ transplantation.
According to Liu Zhizhong, director of the Department of Urology at Inner Mongolia Baogang Hospital, the theme of the forum was the evaluation of marginal donor organs. Liu said that how to utilize this resource was a common problem faced by many medical centers.
“There are strict regulations on the choice of patient donors,” Liu added.
“However, in the current situation of serious shortage of donor organs, many marginal donors can be used after appropriate pathological, clinical, and imaging evaluations.”
Compared with the kidney transplant data from only 20 cases throughout the whole year of 2018, kidney transplant work in Inner Mongolia has greatly improved this year.
Inner Mongolia Baogang Hospital began performing organ transplant surgery as early as the early 1980s. Since the country made Donation after Circulatory Death as the sole source of organs, the Urology Department of Inner Mongolia Baogang Hospital has completed 37 cases of organ donations, and 109 physical organs were actually used. The hospital has performed 78 DCD-sourced kidney transplantations.
