A team of taxi drivers volunteers to provide free rides for 132 gaokao candidates in Baotou city, in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on July 7. The team was first formed in 2003 and has provided this kind of service for 18 consecutive years. The gaokao, also known as the National College Entrance Exam, is considered to have the potential to change a person’s life. The two-day exam was postponed to July 7 and 8 this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [Photo/Baotou Daily]

Candidates -- including the children of medics, those from low-income households, single-parent families, children of laid-off workers, as well as students with special hardships and transportation needs in remote counties and districts -- were able to book taxis in advance through the service hotline and enjoyed free taxi rides during the college entrance examination.
