Beiliang new area in Baotou city -- located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region -- is to add a fitness center that will provide complete sports infrastructure for 100,000 permanent residents, according to a report in the Baotou Evening News.

Once the largest shantytown area in China, Beiliang initiated its shantytown renovation project in 2013, which officials said was completed to the great benefit of the community.

According to local media reports, the accommodation area per capita for Beiliang's residents has since doubled and the new area now boasts a raft of new activity centers, clinics and expanded primary schools.

Autonomous region project funding of 2 million yuan ($298,800) has been issued for the fitness center.

Officials said the facility will enrich the daily health and fitness activities and the overall quality of life of the new area's residents.
