Baotou sets up carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals

Updated: 2021-04-27

The city of Baotou in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region is to increase its carbon reduction efforts and lead the way in green development, according to its natural resources bureau.

The city has formulated an "Implementation Plan for Deeply Promoting Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality and Accelerating the Construction of a Green and Low-Carbon City" – and formed an initial action plan in 10 key areas.

Baotou will focus on key carbon sequestration and carbon reduction areas such as farmland protection and energy efficiency in buildings. It will improve the carbon sink capacity of agriculture and construction, and effectively ensure the green and low-carbon operation of urban and rural areas.

The city will seek new breakthroughs in low-carbon practices. It will develop low-carbon transportation lines, encourage green lifestyles, and promote the construction of low-carbon settlements, as well as building a low-carbon industry line to strengthen industrial integration and layout optimization.

Baotou will organize and promote major ecological restoration projects. By 2025, all mines in the city will meet the requirements for "green mine" status.

In 2021, the city's overall land and space planning work will be completed. Low-carbon development concepts such as "compact cities" and "mixed land use" should be integrated into planning, implementation and dynamic management, fully embodying the concept of low-carbon development in urban and rural development, land use, and industrial layout.
