The Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced the list of 23 cities and districts to be included in the climate investment and financing pilot program on Aug 10. Baotou is among them, making it the only selected city in Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Baotou has basically established a coordinated policy and work system for reaching peak carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. Its dual-carbon program covers various fields, industries, regions, and key enterprises, and supporting policies cover finance, technology, taxation, and administrative approval.

The city is also developing green industries. Since 2021, distributed wind project and distributed photovoltaic project indicators, as well as new energy construction indicators for 11 projects have been obtained. Their total investment is expected to be about 20 billion yuan ($2.96 billion), driving related industry investment to about 74 billion yuan.

The world's first 100,000-metric-ton carbonized steel slag comprehensive utilization industrialization demonstration project is being implemented in Inner Mongolia Baorong Environmental Protection New Material Co, which is located in Baotou.

In addition, the 2 million tons of CCUS demonstration project of Baogang Group has started. As the largest CCUS whole industrial chain demonstration project in China and the first in the autonomous region, it not only provides important support for the realization of the autonomous region's carbon emission reduction goals, but also injects new vitality into the realization of energy conservation, emissions reduction and low-carbon economic development in the country's steel industry.
