The world's first solid waste recycling and carbon dioxide mineralization demonstration project is being implemented in the pilot plant of the comprehensive utilization of carbonized iron and steel slag of Inner Mongolia Baoyu Environmental Protection New Material Co (a subsidiary of Baogang Group).
Yu Wenjian, member of the Party committee of Baogang Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Technology Industry Co, explained that the company was mainly focused on the comprehensive utilization of iron and steel slag and used the latest scientific research technology of Columbia University in the United States to comprehensively process iron and steel slag, forming high-purity calcium carbonate, iron-containing materials and other products.
High-purity calcium carbonate can be used in many industries such as papermaking and plastics, reducing the mining and calcination of limestone mines, tree felling in the process of pulp production, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as promoting the development of a circular and low-carbon economy. This will support solid waste recycling and carbon dioxide sequestration in the steelmaking process.
Yu said that as the world's first comprehensive utilization project of solid waste and carbon dioxide mineralization, the project provides a new development trajecotry for the sustainable development of the steel industry.
Additionally, the project will provide a further technological industrialization foundation for cleaner production and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the steel industry, and realize the comprehensive utilization of resources and the circular economy industry of iron and steel enterprises.
