Baotou grain output hits new high
Over the years, Baotou city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has consistently prioritized food security and abundant harvests as significant projects to improve local people's livelihoods.
In 2023, the total grain sowing area in the city reached 3.23 million mu (214,833 hectares). Of this, the area reserved for growing corn expanded to 2.23 million mu, an increase of 60,300 mu compared to the previous year. The wheat sowing area hit 207,100 mu, up 54,100 mu.
Baotou made efforts to stimulate market demand and local enthusiasm for grain production, and agricultural subsidies were effectively implemented. This year, the city distributed 530 million yuan ($72.5 million) in agricultural subsidies, providing strong support for healthy levels of grain production.
The city also reduced the use of fertilizers, pesticides, plastic mulch, and water resources, saving costs. Additionally, it established agricultural technology service teams, providing technical guidance and training, and applied Beidou navigation and unmanned aerial technology for pest control, raising the level of modernization in agricultural production.
Overall, the above measures have improved the quality and efficiency of grain production in the city.
According to local experts' yield predictions, this year's total grain output is expected to be 75,000 metric tons higher than that of last year, increasing farmers' planting income by 180 million yuan.
