Baotou aids '14th Winter Games' carbon neutrality initiative

Updated: 2024-01-30

Baotou in Inner Mongolia autonomous region will donate 5,000 metric tons of locally-developed forestry carbon credits to the "14th Winter Games" carbon neutrality initiative, offsetting some of the carbon emissions generated during the event. This will assist the autonomous region in creating a demonstrative "zero-carbon" event.

Forestry carbon credits certify the carbon sequestration and oxygen release functions of forests as assets for trading. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed and oxygen released by forests each year is monitored and accounted for by third parties, reviewed by experts, and approved by forestry and related departments before certificates with revenue rights are issued.

The economic costs required to offset the carbon emissions during the "14th Winter Games" carbon neutrality initiative will be calculated and paid to third-party companies or organizations. They will then offset the corresponding amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through tree planting or other environmental projects. The 5,000 tons of carbon credits donated by Baotou will be used to offset a portion of the economic costs.

Carbon credits were developed in Baotou in November 2022, after it was selected among the first group of national forestry carbon sequestration pilot cities.

As of now, more than 20 companies from both inside and outside Inner Mongolia have subscribed to 30,200 tons of Baotou's carbon credits, achieving the city's cross-provincial transactions for carbon credits.
