Baotou empowers border communities with sustainable energy

Updated: 2024-09-18

In the Baoyin Chagan village bordering Baotou city, herder Nashun Jirigala recently conducted a mechanical operation test for his newly electrified farm. As a leader in rural prosperity, he founded an agricultural cooperative in 2014 but faced challenges due to inadequate power supply for essential machinery.

With the implementation of the "Darhan Muminggan Joint Banner Solidifying Borders and Enriching Residents" initiative, Nashun’s cooperative has transformed. The introduction of smart monitoring systems has streamlined farm management, allowing for efficient production. Nashun expressed gratitude for government support, highlighting the transition from costly diesel to reliable electricity, which will significantly ease winter hardships.

This initiative represents a substantial investment of 3.6 million yuan ($507,372) to enhance living conditions for remote herders in towns. By providing off-grid solar energy systems, the project delivers stable power to nearly 16 households previously cut off from the grid.

However, approximately 1,000 more households remain without electricity due to their remote locations. The company offers various solar energy solutions to address this, ensuring herders can enjoy reliable electricity for everyday needs. Engineer Yang Zhongyao noted that these systems can generate enough power annually to meet basic household requirements.

The project revitalizes the region, supporting the development of modern livestock farming. Families like Xiang Xiaoping’s have benefited, transitioning from minimal wind energy to powering appliances like refrigerators and washing machines. His family now enjoys the comforts of modern living, reflecting a major improvement in their quality of life.

Local leaders emphasize that the project addresses electricity needs and promotes ecological sustainability, safeguarding grassland health. The banner's government aims to continue these initiatives, fostering economic growth while ensuring a stable, prosperous future for its border communities.
