The Zouxikou historical and cultural block in Baotou preserves more than just architecture; it holds the soul of a city. Among its treasures are the courtyard residences of the Sanguan Temple district, frozen moments in time that echo the memories and resilience of generations past.
"They are the solidified essence of old Baotou," says Liu Qingcheng, a local history enthusiast. "It's heartening to know the city plans to rejuvenate this area and bring the traditional streets back to life."

Nineteen such courtyard houses (or siheyuan) remain in the Sanguan Temple district, weathered but still standing proud. They stand like elders, quietly telling tales of Baotou's past – of entrepreneurial Shanxi merchants, revolutionary struggles, and daily life steeped in tradition. Among them, the Wang, Ba, and Liu family residences reflect the deep roots of ancient Shanxi-style architecture, infused with the openness of grassland culture and unique local character.
Now, with renewed efforts to protect and revitalize the Sanguan Temple district, these historic courtyards may once again become energetic spaces.
