Baotou forest carbon credit trading achieves strong start
Baotou has launched its 2025 forest carbon credit trading with three initial transactions totaling 752.7 metric tons, generating 69,000 yuan ($9,500) in revenue. These trades represent a breakthrough in regional ecological compensation mechanisms, allowing businesses to offset carbon sink losses from construction activities through locally issued digital carbon credits.
These transactions build upon Baotou's pioneering role in carbon market innovation, having established Inner Mongolia's first public carbon credit trading platform in December 2024. As both a regional carbon sink pilot zone and national forestry carbon sequestration pilot city, Baotou continues to develop verifiable local carbon products for trading and offset purposes.
This year, the city plans to establish a branch of the National Carbon Measurement Center to enhance carbon accounting capabilities and create diverse carbon asset forms. These initiatives aim to expand Baotou's carbon credit applications and eventually facilitate nationwide trading of digital carbon tickets.
