Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner pioneers sustainable grazing solutions

Updated: 2025-02-27

As a national pilot region for addressing grassland overgrazing, Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner in Baotou city has reduced livestock overload by 58,000 sheep while decreasing the grazing pressure index by 14 percentage points through innovative ecological management strategies. The banner has developed 455,400 mu (30.36 hectares) of high-yield forage crops, including silage corn and alfalfa, producing over 1.23 million metric tons annually – sufficient to support 1.22 million sheep. This effort is complemented by the restoration of 14,800 mu (986.67 hectares) of degraded grassland through advanced enclosure and reseeding techniques.

The region has established a comprehensive fodder supply system featuring two large storage centers and four distribution hubs, collectively covering over 12,000 square meters. The banner is also implementing cutting-edge breeding technologies, including embryo transfer, to improve livestock quality while reducing numbers. The recent introduction of China's first "grass ticket" system represents a market-based approach to sustainable grazing management.

These comprehensive measures demonstrate Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner's commitment to balancing ecological protection with herder livelihoods, creating a replicable model for regions in northern China facing similar environmental challenges.
