Wang Hugen: A lifetime commitment to forests

Updated: 2025-03-10

In the rugged terrain of Baotou's Daqing Mountain Nature Reserve, 50-year-old Wang Hugen has spent nearly a quarter of a century as the steadfast guardian of 19,000 mu (1267 hectares) of forest. Wang's daily 30-kilometer patrols through punishing conditions have prevented major wildfires in this ecologically vital region.

What began as a daunting assignment has become a lifelong passion. "These trees are my children," said Wang, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the forest includes recognizing animal tracks and bird calls. His innovative fire prevention methods and community engagement with local villagers have been so effective that the reserve has maintained a perfect safety record throughout his tenure, earning him the national honor of "Model Forestry Worker".

Beyond fire prevention, Wang has witnessed and nurtured the forest's remarkable regeneration from sparse plantings to thriving stands of pine. His story mirrors China's growing environmental consciousness, proving that one person's dedication can indeed safeguard nature's future.
