Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner selected as pilot zone for grassland insurance
Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner has been designated as a pilot area for grassland insurance under a new autonomous region initiative (2025-2027). The program, jointly launched by Inner Mongolia autonomous region's finance, forestry, grassland, and financial regulatory departments, covers three million mu (200,000 hectares) of typical and desert steppes in Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner, with total premiums of 12.25 million yuan ($1.7 million).
The insurance safeguards herders who contribute 20 percent of premiums against droughts, fires, floods, pests, and wildlife damage. This follows Baotou's 2024 grassland restoration achievements, including 38.02 percent vegetation coverage. Authorities will now refine implementation to balance environmental protection with herder livelihoods.
