Liu Zhizhong: A lifesaving legend of organ transplants
At Baogang Hospital's urology department, 54-year-old uremia patient Zheng Jun beams with vitality after undergoing an organ transplant. Over 830 lives have been saved by Doctor Liu Zhizhong’s kidney transplant team. For 34 years, Liu has pioneered transplant technologies in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, earning the "national exemplary individual" honor in 2025 and establishing the region’s first comprehensive organ donation system.
Since China standardized transplants in 2007, Baogang has become the region's sole qualified kidney transplant center. Liu's team later developed microsurgical techniques and published transplant guidelines, achieving parity with top-tier hospitals. "We've achieved world-class health care technology for our locals," says Liu, whose department now performs over 60 annual transplants.
With China ranking second globally in transplants, Liu emphasizes public education, saying that every interview spreads awareness. His work embodies the trifecta of labor, model worker, and craftsmanship spirit – saving lives while inspiring societal support for organ donation.
