Collective farming makes breakthrough in agriculture

Updated: 2025-05-30

Guyang county's Shuangshuiquan village has pioneered a "collective farming for prosperity" initiative to vitalize its drought-prone farmlands. By consolidating 5,800 fragmented plots from 49 households into contiguous fields, the project has reduced water used by 40 percent and fertilizer usage by 20 percent through unified management.

Local farmers can now access discounted agricultural supplies and shared machinery services, including 22 combined harvesters and tractors, collectively reducing expenses by over 190,000 yuan ($26,030). The village currently cultivates 1,500 mu (100 hectares) of rapeseed, 1,000 mu (66.67 hectares) of sunflowers, and 2,900 mu (193.33 hectares) of buckwheat under this model.

"We no longer worry about missing planting seasons," said farmer Gao Wangquan, highlighting the improved efficiency. The township further supports farmers through a team of agricultural experts who provide hands-on training in seed selection and field management.

This cooperative approach demonstrates how resource integration and technology can transform traditional dryland farming into a sustainable, profitable system.
