Established in 1956, Qingshan district in central Baotou is one of the city's main districts and was named after its close proximity to Qingshan Mountain.
The district has a total population of 520,000 and an administrative area covering 280 square kilometers. It is composed of 43 ethnic groups including the Mongolian, Han, Hui and Manchu peoples.
It has eight sub-districts, two towns, 54 communities, and 21 administrative villages under its administration.

Qingshan district is one of the top 10 industrial districts in Inner Mongolia autonomous region. After decades of development, a diverse industrial base -- consisting of equipment manufacturing, electricity, building materials and the dairy industries -- formed in the district and an industrial foundation based on equipment manufacturing has been established.
Large-scale enterprises -- such as Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co, Inner Mongolia North Heavy Industries Group and China North Nuclear Fuel Co -- are all based in the district.
Baotou Equipment Manufacturing Industrial Park, located in the district, has undergone rapid development in recent years. The park has built six dominant industrial clusters, including those involved with heavy vehicle equipment, new energy, railways, fully mechanized coal mining, engineering and electronics.
The district has established itself as a national production and processing hub for nuclear fuel, one of two of its kind in China and it has the first production line for commercial spherical fuel elements in the world.
Qingshan district is a typical financial and trade gathering precinct, boasting six major business areas. Its modern services industry shows a strong momentum in expanding multi-format operations, multi-brand agglomerations and multi-group developments.

Qingshan district is home to more than 50 squares, parks and gardens. Public green spaces such as Laodong Park (Labor Park), the Galaxy (Yinhe) Plaza, Northern Weaponry Park and Saihantala Ecological Park can be found there.
The district's total greenery coverage has reached 43 percent and the per capita public green area is estimated at 19.7 square meters.
The district showed steady economic growth in 2020, with the regional GDP reaching 56.64 billion yuan ($8.72 billion), an increase of 3.2 percent year-on-year.
The added value of industrial enterprises above a designated scale increased by 16.5 percent year-on-year.
Fixed asset investment in 2020 showed a year-on-year growth of 5.5 percent.
Employment levels were stable throughout the year, with 11,512 more people finding employment, representing a year-on-year growth of 1 percent. The registered unemployment rate stood at 3.9 percent.
