Jack-o'-lanterns mark Halloween in Baotou

By Lu Wei Updated: 2016-11-01

Children make jack-o’-lanterns at the Science and Technology Children’s Palace in Baotou, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Oct 28, 2016. A jack-o’-lantern is a carved pumpkin lantern, which has long been a symbol of Halloween. The holiday of Halloween falls on Oct 31. To make a jack-o’-lantern, the top of the pumpkin is cut off and the guts are removed. A knife is then used to carve a monstrous or comical image on the pumpkin. A candle will then be placed within the pumpkin before the lid is closed to create a lantern effect. [Photo/Baotou Daily]
