Industry forum opens in Baotou, plotting future for rare earth sector

The 12th Baotou China International Forum on Rare Earth Industry opened in Baotou, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Nov 18.

The forum was jointly hosted by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region People's Government, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Chinese Society of Rare Earths, and Association of China Rare Earth Industry.

The forum saw the release of various policy and industry announcements, as well as the signing of a number of new projects.

The Baotou Rare Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Jiuyuan district and the National Rare Earth Functional Materials Innovation Center agreed 27 projects with enterprises and financial institutions related to the rare earth industry, with a total investment of over 4.55 billion yuan ($692 million).

Six sub-forums were also set up including Rare Earth Market and Applications, allowing participants to learn about the broad prospects of rare earth technological innovation.

Baotou, China's leading supplier of rare earth materials, has long been committed to developing its rare earth industry, with Baotou Rare Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone serving as its base.

The city has successfully hosted 11 sessions of the forum since 2009, boosting its image throughout the industry.

According to officials, rare earth projects have high technological content, great development potential and strong market power.

Baotou plans to further optimize the structure of the rare earth industry and drive the industrial chain to further extend downstream, injecting new vitality into the high-quality development of the sector in Baotou city.
