North China exceeds in its afforestation

2016-02-22 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The Inner Mongolia autonomous region reports completing its afforestation task of 489.3 million hectares for last year, or 110 percent of its original goal, and a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percent, with 416,000 hectares added afforestation, 83,200 hectares of air seeding, and 234,667 hectares of trees planted to stabilize sand.

In the process, the region has developed controls, methods, and patterns for different areas, depending on the geography and natural conditions. On desert areas, the emphasis was on halting the growth of sand, and restoring the vegetation, with protecting the native vegetation and building windbreaks being the key point. In areas of soil and water loss, the focus was on small watershed controls, and increasing soil and water conservation. In agricultural areas, it was on plain afforestation and farmland shelterbelts.
