A group of residents from 120 households gathered in Hohhot in an attempt to set a new world record for the number of people writing Spring Festival couplets on Feb 3.

To set the record, the participants had to write Spring Festival couplets in Chinese characters.

The challenge, mainly organized by the Nonprofit Foundation of Writing China, Southern Metropolis Daily and China Next Generation Education Foundation, saw more than 14,388 people from 47 cities around the nation take part in the attempt.

The World Record Association was invited to witness the result.

The event was not just a chance to make history. It was aimed at encouraging more people to write Chinese characters and carry forward traditional culture.

The organizers will send the documentation to Guinness World Records to have the record verified.
