According to UNESCO, the area constitutes "irreplaceable natural heritage values" and the nominated property contains the world's tallest stationary sand dune Bilutu with an altitude of 1,611 meters, which has been called the  "Everest of the Desert".

The Badain Jaran Desert itself is the second largest mobile desert in China and the nominated Badain Jardan Desert – Towers of Sand and Lakes area is located at Inner Mongolia's Alshaa Right Banner.

Badain Jardan Desert – Towers of Sand and Lakes was reported to the UNESCO World Heritage Center by China in January 2019, which cited World Natural Heritage Assessment criteria, marking the further advancement of its World Heritage application.
