2019-07-30

According to local authorities, over the 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has regenerated and afforested 800,000 hectares of forest in the Inner Mongolia section of the Greater Hinggan Mountains.

According to the results of the 9th National Forest Resource Survey in 2016, the Inner Mongolia section of the Greater Hinggan Mountains has 10.30 million ha of forested land and 8.37 million ha of forests, the forest coverage rate is 78.39 percent, the total timber stock is 1.03 billion cubic meters, and the total forest stock is 941 million cu m.

During the process of afforestation, Inner Mongolia uses tree species with biological and ecological characteristics that are suitable to local conditions, and selects two or more varieties of tree that are adaptable, stress resistant, and have interspecific coordination in order to carry out afforestation in a variety of different conditions.

Over the years, the region has continued to afforest the Greater Hinggan Mountains, mainly with native tree species. It has successfully introduced spruce, seabuckthorn, and Pinus sibirica Du Tour. The region has attained ecological and economic benefits by developing an under-forest economy, among other things.

In the future, the Inner Mongolia section of the Greater Hinggan Mountains forest area is expected to contribute to a modern forestry industry and become home to a number of beautiful forested areas. By 2035, the total stock of timber is expected to surpass 1.3 billion cu m, the forest coverage rate is expected to surpass 80.8 percent, and the total stock of timber is expected to surpass 1.6 billion cubic meters. By the mid-21st century, the forest coverage rate is expected to reach 81.3 percent.
