2019-09-05

Hohhot railway system transported 7.5 million passengers during this year's summer holiday travel rush, which began on July 1 and ended on Aug 31, rail officials said.

This figure represented an increase of 4.5 percent on the previous year, they added.

During the 62-day period, the capital city in Inner Mongolia autonomous region saw a growing number of passengers make short-distance journeys -- up 6.3 percent compared with last year.

To handle the increase in holiday passengers, the Hohhot railway operator launched more trains to places such as Xilinhot, Baotou, Ordos, Jining, and Linhe.

It also introduced more trains to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities in northeastern China, increasing the daily passenger capacity to 10,000.

In addition, the railway operator extended the service time for selling tickets during the period to help ease the heavy traffic.
