The autonomous region is home to 21 airports, including 6 general commuter airports and one base transportation airport since the end of 2016. 

The Zlantun Airport and Wulate Middle Banner Airport were put into use successively in 2016. Holin Gol Airport is set to begin operation later in 2017. The utility airports of New Barag Right Banner, Arun Banner, Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner are under construction, while the Lynsey and Dong Ugimqin Banner transportation airports, and the Arhorchin and Mangui utility airports are currently planned for construction. The relocation projcet of Hohhot Airport and the terminal extension projects of Hulunbuir and Erenhot Airport are underway. The most frequently used airports in Inner Mongolia are Hohhot Baita International, Baotou Erliban, Ordos Ejin Horo, Chifeng, Hulunbuir Hailar, and Manzhouli Xijiao. 

In 2016, the passenger throughput reached 17.99 million, with the cargo throughput reaching 74,916 tons.

Hohhot Baita International Airport

15 kilometers downtown to the southeast and 30 minutes from Hohhot city center, Hohhot Baita International Airport is the largest air transport hub in Inner Mongolia, with airlines flying to almost all the provincial capitals and small-to-medium cities in China. 

The airport's field is classed at the 4E level. Its terminal building, covering 50,000 square meters, can hold 900 people per hour. By 2013, the airport had 132 air routes, 125 of which are domestic, accessible to 63 cities. The airfield and terminal building of the new airport are expected to handle 28 million passengers and 320,000 tons of cargo by 2030.

Baotou Erliban Airport

Nearly 23 km downtown, Baotou Erliban Airport is one of the largest airports in Inner Mongolia, classified at the 4D level. It has flights to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Xi'an among many other mainland cities.

Ordos Ejin Horo Airport 

Ordos Ejin Horo Airport has connections with most major cities in China, such as Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Harbin, Chengdu, Kunming and is accessible by a one hour shuttle bus from downtown

Hulunbuir Hailar Airport

Hulunbuir Hailar Airport is an international airport in Hailar district of Hulunbuir. Flight routes connect Hailar with Beijing, Hohhot, Harbin, Chifeng and many others.
