In 2016, highway construction investment in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region reached 91.5 billion yuan ($13.29 billion), building a total length of 0.19 million km, including 5,153 km of express highways, 6,685 km of class I highways and 16,912 km of class II highways. Roads at the first and secondary level totaled 141,700 km, completing the goal of connecting all villages and towns with oil roads and 95 percent of the administrative village to asphalt roads.

In 2016, the total passenger volume by road was estimated at 104 million, with a total cargo volume of 1,306.13 million tons.
