2020-07-31

Shanghaimiao Energy and Chemistry Base is located in Shanghaimiao town in Otog front banner, administered by Ordos city in North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

It was established in 2001 following approval by Inner Mongolia’s government.

The facility is an important part of the Ningdong-Shanghaimiao Base – one of the 14 large coal bases in the country – as well as being an important part of the "energy golden triangle" comprising of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Shaanxi province, Gansu province and the Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

The base has a planned area of about 1,800 square kilometers, made up of the Shanghaimiao mining area, the Shanghaimiao energy and chemistry industrial park, Shanghaimiao fine chemicals industrial park, a comprehensive park, the Shanghaimiao town area and an environmental restoration area.

Coal resources in the base and its surrounding areas cover more than 4,000 sq km, with proven coal reserves of 14.3 billion metric tons and prospective reserves of 50 billion tons.

The base has built three main supply chains for the coal, coal power and coal chemicals sectors, forming a circular industrial cluster with coal as its foundation, coal power as the support, and the coal chemicals sector as the lead industry.

In October 2014, the energy and chemical industry park was identified as a national eco-industrial demonstration zone by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Commerce.

To date, the park has seen more than 30 large companies – including China Tobacco, China Energy and State Grid – locate there and it has also attracted more than 40 major projects.

Investment in the projects has totaled more than 200 billion yuan ($28.58 billion) and projects involving 71 billion yuan have been completed.
