North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region recently announced the next step in its implementation plan for the autonomous region's rollout of State-compiled Chinese textbooks.

The plan is in response to a central government decision that requires ethnic schools in Inner Mongolia to use State-compiled Chinese textbooks and teach in Putonghua – the standard form of modern Chinese language that takes the Beijing dialect as standard pronunciation.

According to the implementation plan, starting from the autumn semester of 2021, the first and second grades at ethnic primary schools in Inner Mongolia should use the State-compiled "Ethics and Rule of Law" and "Chinese" textbooks and use the national standard language for teaching.

The first and second grades of junior high schools should also use the State-compiled textbooks of "Ethics and Rule of Law," "Chinese" and "History," and use the national standard language for teaching.

Starting from the autumn semester of 2022, the first grade of senior high schools should use the State-compiled textbooks of "Ideology and Politics," "Chinese" and "History," and use the national standard language for teaching.

Inner Mongolia's education department has formulated unique plans related to teacher training, teacher allocation and teaching materials to prepare for the reforms.

Currently, Inner Mongolia has hired another 1,022 teachers and organized teachers from ethnic schools to receive training at 20 normal universities.

Also, the Mongolian-Chinese translations of all the new words in the 12 “Chinese” textbooks for primary school grades 1 to 6 have been completed.
