Inner Mongolia's population reaches 24.05 million, census data shows
The permanent population of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region reached 24.05 million in 2020, citing data from the seventh national census conducted last year.
From the perspective of population distribution, among the 12 leagues and cities in Inner Mongolia, two have a population of more than 3 million, eight have a population of 1 to 3 million, and two have a population of less than 1 million.
The permanent population in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia accounts for 48.55 percent of the permanent population in the entire region, the permanent population in the central area accounts for 41.65 percent, and those in the western region account for only 9.80 percent.
Compared with 2010, the proportion of permanent residents in the eastern region dropped by 2.74 percentage points, the proportion of permanent residents in the central region increased by 2.79 percentage points, and the proportion of permanent residents in the western region fell by 0.06 percentage points.
The data shows that the population of the autonomous region is further concentrated in economically developed regions, urban agglomerations and the capital city.
In terms of the gender composition of the permanent population in the region, the male population is 12.3 million, accounting for 51.04 percent, while the female population is 11.8 million, accounting for 48.96 percent.
The gender balance of the population in Inner Mongolia continues to improve.
With regard to urban and rural population distribution, the permanent population living in cities and towns in the autonomous region is 16.23 million, accounting for 67.48 percent of the region’s permanent population. Meanwhile, the permanent population living in rural areas is 7.82 million, accounting for 32.52 percent.
Compared with 2010, the urban population increased by 2.51 million, while the rural population decreased by 3.16 million. This shows that since 2010, the urbanization process in Inner Mongolia has been steadily advancing, and the urbanization rate of the permanent population has reached 67.48 percent.
