North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region held a series of exciting activities to celebrate the Lantern Festival, which fell on Feb 15 this year.

The Lantern Festival is staged during the first full moon of the new year, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Traditions during the event include eating yuanxiao, boiled glutinous rice flour balls and guessing lantern riddles.

The evening often involves a grand fair with lantern displays, a tradition that can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24).

At the celebration, lanterns of all shapes, sizes and colors light up the streets, while children show off their lanterns on strolls, adding to the bright lights that enhance the revelry.
