In a significant move towards sustainable water management, six cities in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – Hohhot, Baotou, Tongliao, Chifeng, Ordos and Bayannuur – have been designated as key cities for reclaimed water utilization by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Ministry of Water Resources.

This designation is part of a broader national strategy to promote comprehensive water conservation, enhance the development of water-saving societies, and improve the efficient use of water resources. In total, 50 cities across the nation have been identified as key players in reclaimed water utilization.

Among them, Ordos stands out with its innovative multi-source water management strategy, incorporating reclaimed water as a crucial resource for 126 construction projects.

This approach has set a benchmark for resource-based cities in reclaimed water management. Additionally, Ordos has developed a unique "winter storage and summer irrigation" model tailored to its climatic conditions.

The city is also pioneering the establishment of comprehensive policies, management systems, incentive mechanisms, and evaluation frameworks to promote reclaimed water utilization.
