Endangered Oriental stork spotted in Xin Barga Right Banner
An Oriental stork, a critically endangered species and a first-class nationally protected bird in China, was photographed in Xin Barga Right Banner's Hudenuoer Park. It is the bird's first recorded appearance in the region and marks a significant moment for the region's biodiversity.
Resembling the elegant crane, the Oriental stork is often called the "national treasure among birds". This large wading bird belongs to the stork family and is mainly found in open wetlands, grassland marshes, tundra bogs, and shallow lakeshores. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as "Endangered", and it is known for its strict habitat requirements.
Because of its sensitivity to ecological changes, the Oriental stork is widely regarded as an "indicator species" for wetland health. Its unexpected presence in Hudenuoer Park is a promising sign, suggesting a positive shift in the local ecological environment.
In recent years, Xin Barga Right Banner has seen notable improvements in its environmental conditions. Since the onset of spring, hundreds of migratory birds have flocked to the man-made lake in Hudenuoer Park.
