Xiliin Gol League in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region has accelerated its "roads for desert control" initiative this year.

So far, 28 desert road projects totaling 459.3 kilometers have started construction, while the remaining four projects covering 53 km have been put out for bidding.

In 2025, Xiliin Gol is investing 480 million yuan ($66.85 million) in 32 projects, expected to help control 820,000 mu (about 54,700 hectares) of desert. The local transport bureau is strengthening policy and funding support while optimizing road network planning, including hardened village roads, connecting roads, and industrial access roads in desert areas.

To date, the league has secured 1,845 km of approved projects under the initiative, with a total investment of 2.96 billion yuan. By 2030, these projects are expected to restore 4.09 million mu of land, benefiting all 10 counties and cities in Xiliin Gol.

Authorities have also streamlined approvals through joint coordination with development, forestry, and land departments, cutting preparation times. In addition, the “work-for-relief” model will be applied, creating over 1,000 jobs, boosting local incomes, and supporting balanced regional growth.
