The world's largest energy storage power station has been put into operation in Bayannuur, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

The 400 MW/1,600 MWh standalone energy storage project in Dengkou county, developed by Inner Mongolia Energy Group, was connected to the grid and completed its first charge-discharge cycle on Dec 12.

This has expanded the total capacity of the Mengneng Dengkou energy storage station to 1,005 MW/3,010 MWh, making it the largest energy storage facility currently in operation worldwide.

The project adopts a hybrid technology route combining all-vanadium redox flow batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries. The all-vanadium system achieves an energy efficiency of 80 percent at a rated current density of 500 mA per cubic centimeter, with overall system efficiency exceeding 72 percent – significantly outperforming industry standards.

Ma Quanshan, head of the project, noted that the construction-to-grid connection took just 80 days. The energy storage station serves both load and power source functions, helping shave peak demand, support grid stability, promote renewable energy integration, and improve the utilization of wind and solar resources.
