North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region plans to begin construction on 5,000 kilometers of rural roads in 2026, along with maintenance work on 4,000 km of existing roads and the renovation of 50 unsafe bridges, strengthening transport support for rural vitalization.

In 2025, the region accelerated improvements to rural and pastoral transport networks. A total of 710 rural road projects covering 6,603 km were launched, with 493 projects spanning 4,441 km completed – 110.9 percent of the annual target and 10.9 percentage points higher year-on-year.

Road safety and maintenance also advanced steadily. By the end of 2025, construction had begun on 190 unsafe bridge renovation projects, with 156 completed. Road safety works were launched on 277 projects covering 639 km, nearly all of which have been finished. Maintenance projects totaled 7,375 km, with 7,228 km completed, achieving 132 percent of the annual target.

The "work-for-relief" approach delivered tangible benefits. Across 188 projects, 2,369 local residents were employed, with 18.23 million yuan ($2.61 million) paid in wages and 1,953 training sessions provided, helping create jobs, boost incomes, and support sustainable rural development.
