Located in the central part of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Jiuyuan district covers an area of 734 square kilometers and contains a population of 300,000.

There are more than 20 ethnic groups living in the district including the Mongolian, Han and Hui peoples.

The history of the district can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. It is home to numerous historical sites, including the Great Walls constructed during the Warring States period (475-221BC), the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) and the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24). It also contains ancient villages with many extant structures from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

Jiuyuan district is located in the core area of the Hohhot-Baotou-Yinchuan-Yulin economic zone and Hohhot-Baotou-Ezhou-Yulin city cluster.

The district is also home to the Inner Mongolia Rare Earth New Material Industrial Park, with a planned area of 80 square kilometers and more than 70 resident companies. It is an important base for major industrial projects in Baotou city.
